324m transactions of nearly EUR 9.1bn, 12m active users – BLIK sums up Q3 2022

The third quarter of 2022 was a landmark year for BLIK. Users made over 300 million transactions in three months for the first time in system history. It is an increase of 67% year-on-year. At that time, the number of payments in traditional payment terminals grew the most dynamically. During this period, the system recorded as many as 67.7 million such transactions, almost a third of which were contactless payments. At the end of September 2022, BLIK was actively used by 12 million customers – and they performed an average of 3.5 million operations with it each day.

BLIK closes Q3 2022 with increases across all channels. From July to September, its users made 324 million transactions, and as many as 864 million since the beginning of the year. This means that over the three quarters of this year, there were nearly 90 million more BLIK payments than in the first six years of the system's operation combined.

Strong position in e-commerce

BLIK remains the most popular service in e-commerce. From July to September, Poles used it to pay for online purchases 178 million times – in other words, 41% more than in the previous year. The value of transactions in this channel reached PLN 22.1 billion (EUR 4.7 billion), compared to PLN 14.9bn (EUR 3.2bn) in the previous year (+48%). The average value of a single online purchase in Q3 2022 was PLN 124 (EUR 26).

The fact that BLIK is a popular online payment method chosen by customers is confirmed by data released regularly by the National Bank of Poland. According to statistics, from April to June 2022, customers used BLIK in Polish e-commerce three times more often than cards. In the second quarter of 2022, Poles made 167.4 million online transactions using BLIK, compared to 53.7 million transactions with payment cards.

BLIK's current advantage in the online channel seems unwavering. We have also seen a steady increase in its popularity in global e-commerce for many months. BLIK's presence outside our country is an indispensable step in our further development. We want our presence to be significant, especially in Central and Eastern Europe. One of the steps to achieve this goal is the recent acquisition of the Slovakian payment platfrom VIAMO

- says Dariusz Mazurkiewicz, president of the Polish Payment Standard, the operator of BLIK.

Impressive growth in POS transactions

In the third quarter of 2022, every fifth BLIK transaction was made at a payment terminal. In the analysed period, covering two holiday months, users made over 67 million transactions, which is 175% more compared to the same period in the previous year. The steadily increasing interest in BLIK contactless payments had a significant impact on the results achieved in this channel. Between July and September 2022, users chose this payment method 21.5 million times. Since its launch, the service has been used in 100 countries on 6 continents.

In a very short time since the introduction of contactless payments, we have reached many of our users with information about the new BLIK service. Currently, 1.5 million people have activated it in their bank's mobile apps. The growing interest in this feature is strongly influenced by our ongoing marketing operations. From the very beginning, we have aimed to popularise this solution and show that it is the fastest, easiest and safest way to pay at traditional terminals. The efficiency of our actions in this regard was recently confirmed by awarding golden Effie to BLIK. It is one of the most prestigious marketing industry awards in the world

- adds Monika Król, vice president of the Polish Payment Standard, the operator of BLIK.

Twice as many BLIK phone transfers

The third quarter of 2022 also saw a large increase in P2P transfers, which already account for 20% of all BLIK transactions. From July to September, there were as many as 65 million of them, which is 104% more compared to the same period in the previous year. The value of the money transferred in this way amounted to PLN 8.2 billion (EUR 1.7 billion) (+121% year-on-year). The average value of a BLIK phone transfer in this period was PLN 135 (EUR 28.7).

In the discussed quarter there was also a steady growth in ATM cash deposits and withdrawals. At the end of September 2022, their number increased by 27% year-on-year – to 13.6 million. In turn, their value reached PLN 9.2 billion (EUR 1.96 billion) (+37% year-on-year). The share of ATM operations now accounts for 4.2% of all BLIK transactions.

Nearly 5,000,000 transactions in one day

In the third quarter of 2022, Poles made an average of 3.5 million BLIK transactions each day. Meanwhile, the record daily number of BLIK operations in this period was 4.9 million. The average amount of BLIK payments during that time was PLN 132 (EUR 28). The value of all transactions made with BLIK reached PLN 42.9 billion (EUR 9.1 billion), which is 61% more compared to the same period in 2021.

There is also a steady growth in the number of people who actively use BLIK. It increased by more than 700,000 users (to 12 million) in three months, from July to September.

The popularity of BLIK as a comprehensive payment system in the Polish market is a fact. The simplicity, convenience and security of transactions have earned BLIK the recognition of consumers who willingly recommend it to their relatives and friends. We see the steady flow of new users as confirmation that we develop the system according to their needs. That is why today, in addition to foreign expansion operations, we also focus on improving our services, especially the BLIK Pay Later, which has been provided to a selected group of Bank Millennium clients since September as part of tests. Over the past few years, this prospective settlement method has gone from a niche payment method to one of the hottest trends in the market. We believe that our version of this solution may gain us a group of regular users

- concludes Dariusz Mazurkiewicz.

BLIK is a common mobile payment standard. Currently, virtually every client of domestic payment institutions offering mobile apps has the option of using BLIK in such an app. The company Polski Standard Płatności (PSP) is responsible for the development of the system. PSP constantly develops BLIK capabilities to make the system as functional as possible for its users. The shareholders of the PSP are Alior Bank, Bank Millennium, Santander Bank Polska, ING Bank Śląski, mBank, PKO Bank Polski and Mastercard.
