BLIK presents its results for the second quarter of 2020

In the second quarter of 2020, BLIK users performed 97.4 million transactions, and 175 million in the whole of the first half of the year. At the end of June, BLIK was being actively used by 5.42 million users, which is almost half of everyone who uses mobile banking apps. BLIK is the strongest brand in the payments category, the fastest growing innovation on the payments market, and is also the most frequently recommended payment method.

In the second quarter of this year, BLIK users performed more than 7 million more transactions than in the whole of 2018. As usual, the largest number of transactions were made in the Internet – there were as many as 73 million of them – this was 110% more than a year ago and 27% more than in the first three months of the year. Online payments account for three quarters of all transactions.

The pandemic has transferred trade to the web, and there, BLIK is the first choice payment method because of the speed, convenience and security of payments. We have also seen a huge increase in the number of transfers to phone numbers. “Poles are increasingly willing to settle their accounts without using cash, which is very important at the time of the coronavirus threat,”

says Dariusz Mazurkiewicz, President of Polski Standard Płatności, operator of BLIK.

Users made as many as 10.6 million BLIK transfers to a phone number in the second quarter – this is 47% growth on the first three months of the year and almost 200% more than in the same period of last year.

The number of transactions at traditional payment terminals increased by 20% compared with the first quarter – there were 8.4 million of them (68% growth year-on-year). The move away from cash transactions during the pandemic is also visible by the decline in the number of withdrawals from ATMs. There were 5.5 million such transactions, which is 8% less than the year before.

The average number of daily transactions in the second quarter was over one million, whereas the record number for the quarter was over one million three hundred thousand (1,327k). Compared to the first quarter of the year, the average value of transactions increased and amounted to PLN 135 (PLN 5 more than in the previous quarter). An individual withdrawal from an ATM was an average of PLN 570 (compared to PLN 516 in the first three months of the year) – users withdrew money less frequently, but took larger amounts. The total value of all transactions with BLIK in April, May and June was over PLN 13 billion, 28% more than in the first quarter.

Almost 5.5 million active BLIK users
Polski Standard Płatności, operator of the BLIK system checked how many people use instant mobile payments. It was assumed that an active user is a person who makes at least one transaction per month. Users who made only transfers to a phone number without using other BLIK payment channels were not taken into account. BLIK was actively used by 5.42 million people at the end of the second quarter. This is 67% more than a year earlier. Today, almost every other user of bank mobile apps in Poland pays with BLIK.

BLIK is the fastest growing payment innovation in Poland
During the year, the number of people who declare that they use BLIK increased by 9 p.p. to 28% – as transpires from the KANTAR survey conducted on a representative sample of 2400 Poles. This is the highest result among cashless payment systems. It is even higher than contactless payments by phone. BLIK is also a very popular method of payment. The inclination to recommend the service by its users (NPS indicator) for BLIK is 57 points. In comparison, the average for the banking market in Poland in the second quarter is just 18 points. BLIK is willingly recommended because of speed and convenience of payment. BLIK is also distancing itself from other brands in the payment category – the Brand Power index, which shows the strength of a brand among users of banking apps developed by Kantar for BLIK in the second quarter was as high as 37%. BLIK achieved a better result than the brands of the payment organizations that have been on the market for many years and was many times better than any other mobile payment brand.

BLIK is a nationwide, universal payment standard that uses the latest technologies. The ability to use BLIK in mobile banking apps is currently available to more than 90% of all customers of domestic financial institutions. Polski Standard Płatności (PSP) is responsible for the development of the system. PSP is constantly developing BLIK’s capabilities so that the system is as functional as possible for its users. PSP’s shareholders are: Alior Bank, Bank Millennium, Santander Bank Polska, ING Bank Śląski, mBank, PKO Bank Polski and Mastercard. BLIK can also be used by customers of Getin Bank, Bank Pekao SA, BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole, Inteligo, T-Mobile Banking Services and the cooperative banks associated in Spółdzielcza Grupa Bankowa, BPS Bank and cooperative banks from the BPS Group.
